What are probiotics?

The probiotics are, according to the WHO definition, live microorganisms that, when administered in sufficient quantity, have beneficial health effects on the person who ingests them. 

These microorganisms are naturally present in certain foods, especially fermented foods such as yogurt, and are known as probiotic foods. They can also be incorporated into the formulation of food supplements, being used as a complementary treatment for many diseases

Among the microorganisms most used as probiotics, the bacterial genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium stand out, in turn formed by a multitude of different species (and strains), especially Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium longum.      

· Kluyveromyces marxianus

There are other species used, such as the widely known Saccharomyces boulardii yeasts, or Kluyveromyces marxianus, which is currently gaining importance due to the great benefits it presents.

How to take probiotics?

Capsule format

The most widespread format for taking this type of food supplement is the capsule, since it greatly facilitates the intake of the probiotic. In addition, these capsules can be opened by dispensing the content in a little water in the most complicated cases, such as people with difficulty to ingest food or in young children.

3-month period

The probiotic intake time that we recommend from Bioithas is 3 months, since it is estimated that this period is when the change produced by the probiotic in the intestinal microbiota remains stable for the longest time.


No side effects

Side effects rarely occur due to the intake of probiotics, only in some cases a slight abdominal and intestinal discomfort can be perceived during the first days of taking, due to the changes that probiotic strains produce in the intestinal microbiota.
